Hydronic Heating Systems

Hydronic Heating Systems

Hydronic heating systems have been around for many years, and these consist of a system of tubing through which flows warm water, and these warm pipes heat up the room and its contents from the ground up. Such a system is comprised of a number of components, including a boiler or hot water heater, pex tubing, manifolds, pumps, and either wood panels or gypcrete, which is a concrete-like material. The water heat, controlled by a thermostat, is anywhere from 80 to 140 degrees F and is circulated throughout the floor.

With hydronic systems there are no cold spots in the house which can be the case with forced air types of systems. This type of system is very complex and needs to be designed and installed by experienced professionals. Hydronic systems are not the best choice for heating small areas like bathrooms or kitchens since a lot of components are needed in the setup. This approach works best for an entire house, so unless your house is being gutted it is best to consider hydronic heating when building a new home during the initial construction phase. Traditionally the tubing was set into 2 to 4 inches of concrete, but more recently pre-cut wood panels with installed tubing have come onto the market. These are much lighter than the concrete system and make it feasible for major remodeling projects and not just during initial construction.

Hydronic heating has several significant advantages. These include an excellent level of comfort since, as stated, there are no cold spots in the house and the floors and other objects in the rooms are pleasantly warm to the touch. This system can be used under any type of flooring including tile, marble, carpet or wood or even concrete floors. In addition the system is cost efficient and can save 20-40% over other traditional heating methods. The system is quiet since there are no fans, and ductwork is not needed.

If you are looking to build a new house or are undergoing a major upgrade on your old house, hydronic heating is worth asking about.
